Emergency dock to be named for Sal Prato

The man who was partly responsible for the construction of an emergency boat dock in Stirling Harbor, which allows access to Eastern Long Island Hospital by boat, will be honored June 30 at a rededication ceremony.

The dock will be dedicated to Salvatore Prato, who spearheaded efforts to fund and construct the dock along with Troy Gustavson of Orient and John Costello of Greenport.

Mr. Prato, a Greenport resident who ran an electrical contracting business, died in 2009. An avid boater, he helped raise more than $82,000 for the installation of the emergency dock, which was completed in 2003 and has since provided assistance for many boating accident victims.

When a boat docks, an alarm at the gate sounds, alerting hospital personnel to the potential emergency. A phone is available on the dock to connect boaters to emergency staff.

The rededication ceremony will be held Thursday, June 30, at 1 p.m. at the ELIH emergency dock. Those who wish to attend should RSVP by calling 477-5164.
