Cutchogue-New Suffolk: Historical Council Membership Day

Father’s Day was conceived by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. Because it was the month of Smart’s birthday, a day in June was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration 101 years ago. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 70.1 million fathers across the nation. Happy Father’s Day to all!

Here on the North Fork we celebrate Father’s Day and “Strawberry Season” at the same time. As the strawberries reach their peak, the Mattituck Lions Club brings the community together for four days of fun and purpose. Tonight kicks off the fun with hulling night 5 to 9 p.m. Grab a family member or friend and gather with others under the tent at Strawberry Fields. Festival proceeds support the Lions’ mission of helping the blind and a wide array of community and nonprofit organizations.

The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council invites you for Membership Day and a Father’s Day cookout Sunday, June 19, noon to 2 p.m. Tour the historic buildings and have a picnic at the Village Green. There will be photo ops for Dad in the vintage 1926 Model T truck and free hot dogs, lemonade and iced tea. Learn more about the council and its events, including the annual antiques show, lobster feast and antique car show. For more information, call 725-7122 or visit cutchoguenewsuffolkhistory.org.
