Heat advisory in effect as heat index climbs above 100

A heat advisory is in effect today until 9 p.m., as the heat index forecast is expected to climb above 100, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

High levels of heat and humidity are expected, and “adverse health affects” are possible if proper precautions aren’t taken, the advisory warns.

A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity makes the temperature feel like 100 to 104 degrees for two consecutive hours.

The weather service suggests rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening, being weary of signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, wearing light-weight and loose-fitting clothing and drinking plenty of water.

It also recommends taking frequent rest breaks in shady or air-conditioned areas when working outdoors.

The temperature is not expected to rise above 90 degrees again over the next five days.
