Donald Edward Wachtel

Donald Edward Wachtel died July 17 at his home in Greenport. He was 47.

He was born May 5, 1964, in Rockville Centre to Philip Joseph and Virginia Alberta (Hemleb) Wachtel. He graduated from high school, and married Tonia Smiley on Aug. 13, 2000, at The Inn and Spa at East Wind in Wading River.

Mr. Wachtel owned and operated a construction and tile installation business for 18 years.

According to family, he enjoyed fishing, clamming and crabbing and loved hanging out with his friends at the bar at Front Street Station in Greenport. He also enjoyed house hunting, family said, but his favorite pastime was pulling jokes on people.

He is survived by his wife; his daughters, Alexis and Paige; his siblings, Eileen (Gary) Charters, Jennifer (Chris) Smith and Chris (Marianne) Wachtel; his parents; his nieces, Brittney Charters, Rachel Smith and Isabel, Sophia and Emma Wachtel; his nephews, Matthew Charters and Charlie Smith; his mother-in-law, Louise Smiley; his brothers-in-law, Tony Washington, Jimmie Lee Smiley III, Keith Smiley and Shawn Smiley; his sisters-in-law, Sonia Smiley, Caprice Grace Smiley and Jessica Smiley; and a host of other nephews and nieces.

Visiting hours are scheduled for July 20 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service will be held Thursday, July 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, Father Tom Murray officiating. Cremation will be private.
