Boys Basketball: Wildcats are too much for Tuckers

The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats were bigger, stronger and, for one night at least, better than the Mattituck Tuckers.

All one had to do was refer to the Riverhead High School scoreboard to see that on Tuesday evening. Three Wildcats scored in double figures in a 54-22 thumping of the Tuckers in their Town of Brookhaven Boys Basketball Summer League game.

Kevin Turano scored 14 points, Robbie Bray had 12 points to go with five assists, and John Kovach collected a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-3).

Josh Conklin was the top scorer for the Tuckers (1-6) with 13 points. Austin Tuthill and Will Gildersleeve added eight each.

The Wildcats shot 47.8 percent from the floor, including 6 of 10 from three-point range. They also won the turnover battle with 13, which was 11 less than the Tuckers.

A 12-2 run, featuring successive three-pointers by Travis Qualley and Turano, got the Wildcats off to a good start and a 14-4 lead. The Tuckers ran off eight straight points to pull to within 21-14, but the Wildcats responded by scoring the next 12 points. They led by 33-15 at halftime.
