Cops: Man charged with BWI after passenger falls into water

A Connecticut man who reported that a passenger had fallen off of his boat in Orient Harbor was charged with boating while intoxicated Sunday night.

Police said that Brian Dermody, 54, of Stafford Springs, Conn. called to report that Wayne McBreairty, 45, of Ellington, Conn. had fallen out of his boat. When police arrived on the scene, Mr. McBreairty had gotten back on board the boat, but Mr. Dermody was observed to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, according to police reports. Mr. Dermody was arrested and held overnight for a morning arraignment.

• James Breitenbach, Jr., 23, of Laurel was charged with DWI just after 3:30 a.m. on July 23, after he was stopped for driving with a headlight out on Route 48 in Mattituck. Police said that they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Mr. Breitenbach’s breath and he failed several roadside sobriety tests. Mr. Breitenbach was taken to headquarters and held overnight for arraignment.

• Carlos M. Campos, 32, of Cutchogue was charged with DWI at about 10 p.m. on July 22, after he was stopped for several traffic violations while driving westbound on Route 48 in Southold. Police said that Mr. Campos failed field sobriety tests and was taken to headquarters and held overnight for arraignment.
