Health Beat: Employees of the month
• McCall Vineyard & Preserve will host the Eastern Long Island Hospital Gala, which benefits the emergency department, on Saturday, Aug. 13, beginning with cocktails and a raw bar at 5 p.m. followed by a “movable feast.” The event will go forward rain or shine and includes a live auction and raffle. Tickets are $175 per person. Patrons who contribute $1,000 will get two free tickets and benefactors who contribute $2,500 will receive four free tickets. Tickets are available via the hospital’s website, elih.org.
• A representative of the Suffolk County Office for the Aging will provide individual free health insurance counseling at Mattituck-Laurel Library on Tuesday, July 19, 1:30-4 p.m. Call 298-4134.
The library will host a free program for families on ‘getting juiced about nutrition,’ Thursday, July 21, at 6:30 p.m. Call 298-4134.
The library will also host a program on good carbs/bad carbs with registered physician’s assistant Louise Cardellina on Thursday, July 21, at 7 p.m. Ms. Cardellina will discuss carbohydrates, complex and refined starches, fiber, the glycemic index, blood sugar and how what you eat affects your body.
Two 10-week sessions of yoga instruction begin Tuesday, July 19, at 5 and 6:30 p.m. Bring a yoga mat or towel. There’s a $60 fee for each series for Mattituck-Laurel residents and $65 for out-of-district residents. Call 298-4134.
• Mary Rubio is Peconic Landing’s employee of the month for July. Ms. Rubio has been employed at the life care community for more than four years and works at The Shores as a licensed practical nurse. Her colleagues said she is focused on residents’ needs and knows their likes and dislikes and their family members.
“She is a caring, concerned, compassionate person,” said Greg Garrett, Peconic Landing’s vice president and administrator. “To work with Mary is a distinct pleasure.” She’s happy and joyful in her interactions with both residents and staff members and is a proven leader, Mr,. Garrett said.
• Sally King of Greenport has been named June’s employee of the month at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport. Says Ms. King, who has worked at San Simeon for eight years, “I care for [the residents] just like they are my own grandparents.”
As a memorial to her young son, Ms. King contributes a scholarship to her alma mater, Greenport High School, where her daughter, Karine, is an honor student.
