North Fork school board leadership remains the same

There were no surprises at last week’s round of reorganization meetings for North Fork school boards.

The leadership on all boards remained the same: Gerard Diffley remains president of the Mattituck-Cutchogue Board of Education; Paulette Ofrias accepted a second term to lead the Southold board; and in Greenport, Tina Volinski will continue as president for a second year.

Deborah Dumont continues for a second year as president of the Oysterponds Board of Education and Tony Dill will continue to lead the New Suffolk board, where he has served for nine years, most of them as president.

In Southold, board members established a food service committee to continue exploring whether the school should establish its own in-house cafeteria operation to replace Aramark, which has run its cafeteria for several years.

Board members’ study of the situation over the past year included visits to other school districts that operate their own food services. They came back impressed, and board member Scott DeSimone pushed hard for a change.

But Aramark officials rallied, requesting an opportunity to provide some of the options that self-run systems offer, including a deli sandwich station, and board members decided to give Aramark a chance while they continued to explore their options.

With a few exceptions, school board meetings in the various districts will continue to be held on the same days as before. That means Mattituck-Cutchogue will meet on the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.; Greenport on the third Wednesday at 7 p.m.; Oysterponds on the third Tuesday at 7 p.m.; and New Suffolk on the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Southold’s schedule varies month to month, but in general, work sessions are held on the second Wednesday and regular meetings on the fourth Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Suffolk Times will carry regular meeting listings each week to account for changes in these schedules. Two changes are currently slated for August: The Southold school board will hold a work session on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m., and Greenport’s will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m.
