Michael Styk

Former Orient and Greenport resident Michael Styk died Aug. 9 at his home in New Bedford, Mass. He was 91.

He was born May 23, 1920, in Schenectady and lived in Dunmore, Pa., as a child. He moved to Long Island with his family and spent most of his teen years there, working on farms and trapping muskrats in Orient.

Mr. Styk joined the U.S. Army in 1940 and spent two years in the Pacific theater before being deployed to Normandy, entering the war in Europe on D-Day plus six, the second wave. Wounded in action, he received the Purple Heart.

He worked at Greenport Shipyard before moving to New Bedford, where he lived for 55 years and was a commercial fisherman.

He is survived by his niece, Maureen (Raynor) Johnston, and her family.

Arrangements were handled by Defriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Interment took place Aug. 13 at St. Agnes Cemetery in Greenport, with a military service and graveside prayers offered by Fr. Tom Murray.
