Blotter: Man crashed into ‘Welcome to New York’ sign in Orient

Drunk driving charges are pending against a man who reportedly ran into the “Welcome to New York” sign in Orient.

At 1:15 on the morning of Aug. 5 police stopped Steven Arnott, 57, of East Marion on Route 25 in Orient.

Police said Mr. Arnott was heading east and drove off the road and when attempting to back out of thick brush reportedly struck the welcome sign.

He was held overnight for arraignment.

• Just before 10 a.m. on Aug. 4, police charged 53-year-old Andrew Richards of Lewisberry, Pa., with DWI. Police said Mr. Richards, who was westbound on Main Road in Cutchogue, was pulled over for failing to keep in the lane. He was also held for arraignment.

• Doreen Masterson, 44, of Woodstock, N.Y., was arrested for petit larceny on the evening of Aug. 5, after the owner of a shop on Front Street in Greenport recognized her as someone who had allegedly shoplifted from her store two days earlier.

• A Front Street, Greenport, shop owner reported just after 3 p.m. on Aug. 1 that two women in their late 20s took a multicolored plastic ring, valued at $7.50, from her shop while she was helping other customers. Police said the shop owner confronted the suspects, who denied taking the ring and were gone before police arrived.

• Harold J. Downs Jr., 40, of East Quogue was arrested for harassment just after 6 p.m. on Aug. 5, after he was reportedly involved in an altercation with an Orient man. Police said that after Mr. Downs pulled into the parking lot at Truman’s Beach in East Marion at a high rate of speed, a man objected and Mr. Downs reportedly punched him.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
