Capt. Richard M. Sherman

Greenport resident Capt. Richard M. Sherman died July 26 at Eastern Long Island Hospital. He was 88.

He was born March 16, 1923, in Bridgeport, Conn., to Marion (Meachen) and Capt. Robert Sherman. He graduated from high school in 1940 and married Doris Zabriskie on Nov. 30, 1946, in Ridgewood, N.J. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, attaining the rank of Quartermaster Second Class.

A captain and pilot for 25 years with the Hudson River Pilots Association, Capt. Sherman was an indefatigable and lifelong tugboat enthusiast, family members said, and a charter member of the Tugboat Enthusiasts Society.

He was also a 50-year member of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut A.F. & A.M. and belonged to American Legion Griswold-Terry-Glover Post 803 in Southold.

Capt. Sherman is survived by his wife, of Greenport; his sons, James, of New York City, and Donald, of Roscommon, Mich.; his daughter, Susan Harmon of Lexington, Ky.; his sister Jeanette Sheftic of Stratford, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Grace Calkins in 1986.

Visiting hours and an American Legion service with Pastor Ann Van Cleef officiating took place July 29 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Interment will be at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood.
