Greenport: Porter early season start

I now know what they mean by “the calm before the storm.” I’m sending my column a day early this week in case we lose power and, as I’m writing it, the silence outside is eerie. Not even the birds are chirping.

I happened to be at the football field on the first day of practice. I’m happy to report that coach Jack Martilotta has fielded close to 60 guys to represent the purple and gold. Here’s hoping they have a season as strong as their number. Good luck, guys!

Speaking of Porter football, their season starts extremely early this year. The first game of the season will be on the road in Babylon on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. Schedule information for all GHS athletic teams can be found at sectionxi.org

If wishes were flowers, my mother-in-law, Marie Dinizio, would have a field as far as the eye could see. Mom is spending her last few weeks of summer vacation laid up with a broken pelvis. Get well soon, Mom.

The Greenport Rotarians are still looking for help fixing up the gazebo on Adams Street. They need of hands-on labor as well as donations. To volunteer your time, contact any Rotarian. Monetary contributions can be mailed to P. O. Box 204, Greenport, NY 11944

If you still have no power after Irene and you’re looking for something to occupy your downtime, why not get busy cleaning out those closets and help out the Greenport PTA. They’re having a used goods drive on Oct. 22 and need to collect 100 bags of clothing and items like handbags, shoes and stuffed animals in order for the pickup company from New Jersey to make the trip out here. If you can help, contact Sandy Ruroede Martocchia at [email protected]

Just around the corner is the second annual Jeremy Hamilton Scholarship Pig Roast. It will be held at Herzog Park/Fifth Street beach on Saturday, Sept. 17, from noon to 9 p.m. Rain date is Sept. 18, same time, same place. There is no set cost; freewill donations will be accepted and all proceeds from will benefit some lucky senior in the form of a scholarship. Please attend and please be generous.

This week brings the first of the September birthdays. Where has the time gone? I’m sending  out birthday wishes to those I know of who are celebrating during the upcoming week: Michael Rempe, Brian Grilli and Lauretta Rackett Rahmes on Sept. 1; Gary Blasko, Catherine Creedon and Pamela Reed on the 2nd; Stephen Luhman, Caitlin Kapell and Phyllis Montgomery on the 3rd; Danielle Golden on the 4th; Jason Parker, Bob Wallace, Jason Burden and Joe Cherepowich on the 5th; Warren Bondarchuk Jr., Deanna Yoskovich, Mary Speed, Mary Hewitt, Dot Wiggins, Kim Corazzini and Gabriella Garren on the 6th; and Patty Hooks and Andrea Volinski on the 7th.
