Greenport: Reunion plans, a chicken barbecue, and a pig roast

Sorry if Sunday’s rain put a damper on anyone’s weekend plans, but we need it so desperately that I doubt anyone’s really complaining about it. I know how my plants have been suffering, so I can only imagine what our local farmers are feeling — and there’s nothing like local produce grown here on the North Fork!

Carve out some time to hang out in Jesus’ hometown, Nazareth, and find out what life was like when Jesus was a kid during First Baptist Church of Greenport’s family vacation Bible school, Aug. 22-26. Dinner will be provided each night at 5 p.m. and the lesson runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 477-0047.

The Slow Food Garden at Greenport School will have its own table at the Greenport Farmers Market on Saturday, Aug. 20. The market is held at the corner of First and Adams streets from 8 a.m. to noon. Carol Worth, one of the duo who spearheaded the campaign, has posted pictures on Facebook and I’m quite impressed with what the garden has produced thus far.

The members of Greenport Fire Department’s Standard Hose Company will hold their oh-so-delicious chicken barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and, as always, takeout orders will be available. Call 477-8261 for tickets.

Reminder: The second annual Jeremy Hamilton Scholarship Pig Roast will be held at Sixth Street beach on Saturday, Sept. 17, noon–9 p.m. (rain date, Sept. 18). Freewill donations will be accepted — and remember, folks, it’s for a scholarship, so donate generously.

There’s still plenty of time to get your Dream Green Extravaganza raffle tickets to benefit our hospital. Tickets will be sold for $100 each through Sept. 25, when the winners will be announced at the Maritime Festival. The grand prize is $50,000 and 64 other cash prizes will also be awarded. One of my fellow Giants fans celebrated a significant birthday last week. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the info in time to put it in the column. So I hope Jerry Martocchia, who turned 70 on Aug. 6, had a day as special as he is. Happy (belated) birthday, Jerry!

Two very special people exchanged wedding vows 35 years ago this week, promising to love one another “for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, ’til death do us part.” Extra-special anniversary wishes to Judy and Charley Kozora on Aug. 15.
