Southold-Peconic: Southold Fire Department’s annual steak night, Sept. 3

What will you do with the few precious weekends left of the summer of 2011? There are still many late-summer events going on in the next few weeks. The challenge will be fitting them all in!
This Saturday, Aug. 20, the Southold American Legion Auxiliary will sponsor a community yard sale at 9 a.m. Vendor spaces are available by calling Dot Charnews at 734-7478.

The Cell Phones for Soldiers program collected over 200 used cellphones over the last few months. The revenue gained from recycling the phones’ valuable materials is used to purchase calling cards for men and women serving our country overseas. A red collection box is located in the Southold post office for those who have cellphones to donate.

Orientation for incoming seventh-graders and their parents will be held Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. in the district auditorium.

Freshman orientation (for students only) will be Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 11:30 a.m. in the district auditorium. Lunch will be served and schedules will be distributed.

The Southold Fire Department’s annual steak night is Saturday, Sept. 3. Mark your calendar! Tickets are available at the main house or from any member.

You’ll also want to be part of the department’s 125th anniversary festivities on Saturday, Sept. 17. I’ll keep you posted on the events as the day approaches.

Belated happy birthday to Craig Goldsmith on Aug. 17. Liz Scharadin celebrates on the 19th; Bill Grigonis on the 20th; Jessica Ellwood on the 21st; Donna Haase on the 22nd; and Cheryle Amara and Kathleen Helinski on the 23rd.
Happy anniversary to Chris and Andrea Manfredi, who will toast 22 years of marriage on Aug. 19. Belated anniversary wishes to Cheryl and Harry Fishman on the 17th.

Congratulations to Nicholas Amara, a 2011 Southold High School graduate, who received a $5,000 scholarship from the Rosenblatt Foundation based on his high school GPA, an essay and his planned major in writing. Nick will attend the Eugene Lang School of Liberal Arts at the New School.

The Southold Village Merchants and the North Fork Chamber of Commerce will hold a Village Fair this Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be something for everyone, including pony rides, live music, crafts, pirates and refreshments. The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 21.
