Cutchogue-New Suffolk: Historical Council preparing for its Lobster Fest Sept. 17

As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches our minds might turn to the first responders whose dedication and sense of community call them to duty. 24/7 these folks make themselves available to serve us. As the rains and winds from Irene picked up, Volunteer firefighters manned the Cutchogue firehouse through the night so fire and EMS crews would be ready to respond to any emergency. Thank you for your service to our community! Here are a few ways you can show your appreciation: Join a memorial stair climb to honor firefighters (9-11stairclimb.com), contribute to the Twin Towers Orphan Fund (ttof.org), volunteer locally (VolunteerMatch.org) and donate blood (1-800-GIVE-LIFE or RedCrossBlood.org).

Tuesday was Fight Procrastination Day. Take this as an opportunity to tackle a small chunk of a neglected project. Remember it doesn’t have to be perfect!

The fifth annual Foodie Tour on Sunday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., celebrates locally produced food and the North Fork’s artisanal food producers. See organic vegetable, lavender and oyster farms in action; visit a goat dairy; sample boutique confectionery treats; taste local wines, exotic micro-vegetables and tomatoes you’ll never find in the supermarket; and sample dishes made with local ingredients prepared by members of the Slow Food movement. The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council is busy preparing for its Lobster Fest on Saturday, Sept. 17. The trustees are pleased to say that a very limited number of tickets remain, so call 734-7122 to get yours before they sell out.

Read any good books lately? Teens in grades 7-12 will come together at Cutchogue New Suffolk Library on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2-3 p.m. Register at 734-6360. This month’s book discussion on Thursday, Sept. 15, 10-11 a.m., will focus on “I Don’t Know How She Does It” by Allison Pearson. Newcomers always welcome! Some parents ask their children to earn straight A’s and some insist that they excel in sports and attain the highest office in their clubs. Others have a different dream for their brilliant and talented children: Commit to replacing the toilet paper roll. This means actually putting a new roll on the roller and placing the roller back in the wall unit so it’s fully functional — not simply placing a new roll somewhere in the bathroom. Plan to put their laundry and garbage in their hamper and garbage pails not just near them, and to not merely place their dishes in the sink but actually place them in the dishwasher to name a few!

School’s open, so drive carefully! Mattituck High School picture days are Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 12 and 13. Cutchogue East hosts parent night for fifth and sixth grades on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. and the Board of Education will meet on Thursday, Sept. 15 in the high school auditorium.
