Janet Harris

Longtime Southold resident Janet Harris died at Eastern Long Island Hospital on August 29, 2011, at the age of 89. Born in Greenport to Katherine and Thomas Rempe, she was a graduate of Greenport High School in 1941. She married John Harris in 1946, and they spent 55 happy years together until his death in 2001.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Patricia and David Berrill of Glastonbury, Conn., and Kathleen and Robert Fine of Rockville, Md. She leaves her beloved grandchildren, Shannon (Dominick) Mastropoalo, Kevin Berrill (Elizabeth), Gregory Fine and Allyson Fine, and three great-grandchildren, Brady Fine, Emily Mastropoalo, and Jack Berrill. She is also survived by her sister, Nettie Oates, and her brother, Fred Rempe, several sisters- and brothers-in-law as well as many dear nieces and nephews from both the Rempe and Harris families.

Janet was a parishioner of Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue and was an active member of the Sacred Heart Rosary Society.

Janet will be remembered by her family as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She spoke to her daughters daily, sharing every aspect of their lives. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and they will cherish their memories of holidays and summers in Southold. Her family will honor her memory by carrying on the traditions that she held so dear. She will be greatly missed.

The family received friends Sept. 2 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 3 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
