Greenport: Jeremy Hamilton Scholarship Pig Roast to be held Sept. 17

I’m still walking on air as I begin this week’s column. The Heaney family was doubly blessed at the end of August. Greg and Linda Wallace became the proud parents of Shane Samuel, born Aug 30 weighing a whopping 10 pounds, five ounces. Oh-so-pleased with his arrival are big brother, Camden; maternal grandparents, Evelyn and Thomas Walters of Wading River and Kathy and Bob Wallace of East Marion; and paternal great-grandparents Helen and Jack Heaney of Greenport.

The second arrival, for which I’ve been waiting nine months, blessed my daughter and son-in-law, Jenn and Dan Decker, with their son, James Tunis Decker on Aug. 31. James weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces. Jim and I get bragging rights here as do Dan’s father and stepmother, Dan and Carol Decker of New Jersey and maternal great-grandparents Marie and Jim Dinizio of Greenport.

The Friends of Floyd Memorial Library will be back at the Greenport Farmers Market on Saturday Sept. 17, 8 a.m. to noon. They’ve “harvested” the best gently used titles from their Book Nook, so there will be many new titles offering an eclectic mix of hand-picked finds.

The second annual Jeremy Hamilton Scholarship Pig Roast takes place this Saturday, Sept. 17, noon to 9 p.m. at Herzog Park/Sixth Street beach. If it rains, the event will take place Sunday — same time, same place. Freewill donations will be accepted for the scholarship fund.

The Greenport American Legion Auxiliary will hold a reorganizational meeting on Monday, Sept. 19, at 5:30 p.m. to discuss events for the year, membership and officers. The skating rink is coming along and they hope to open soon. Call 477-5914 or email [email protected] for location.

The ELIH Auxiliary’s East End/Shelter Island branch will hold an Italian dinner fundraiser at the Soundview on Thursday, Sept. 22, from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 and will be available at the door. Takeout will be available. All proceeds benefit our hospital.

The Greenport PTA will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. in the home ec room. Among the discussion items is the chinese auction, set for Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the school lawn. They have many prizes and gift certificates from local businesses and will hold a silent auction for two special prizes: four Disney Park-Hopper passes and a Keurig coffeemaker. To contribute auction items, contact Sandy Ruroede Martoccchia at [email protected].
