Greenport: PTA chinese auction, Sept. 24

Another new week finds me back in my home state and some sense of normalcy has returned to my life. I am, however, missing the new man in my life — my grandson — very, very much. I won’t get into the specifics of events going on this week (to refresh your memory, see last week’s issue), but I will give reminders of all that’s going on in Greenport during the coming week.

The ELIH Auxiliary’s East End/Shelter Island branch will hold an Italian night dinner fundraiser at the Soundview Restaurant on Thursday, Sept. 22, from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 and will be available at the door.

The Porter football team will have the home advantage tomorrow night when they host the Stony Brook School Bears at Dorrie Jackson Memorial Field. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Peconic Panthers will hold cheerleader registration Saturday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. for 4- to 11-year-olds at the baseball field across from the Jean Cochran field in Peconic. The fee is $85 per child. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-7 p.m. Call Mark Mellas at 631-902-5030 with questions.

Greenport’s junior fire department will host a buffet breakfast this Sunday, Sept. 25, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Third Street firehouse. Call Samantha at 477-6174 0r 379-3623 for tickets; $9 for adults, $6 for seniors and kids under 12.

It would take all my allotted column space to list all the wonderful items available at the Greenport PTA chinese auction this Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the school’s front lawn. Be sure to stop by and support the PTA.

The Peterson family has a lot to celebrate this week. Wendy Peterson, daughter of Diane and Bob, has been selected to represent Greenport at the NYSCAME all-county music festival in November. Shawn Peterson, son of June and Doug, has been chosen to play trombone with the all-state jazz band in Rochester in December. Congratulations to both of you!

Birthday wishes are being sent out this week to Shelley Boyd, Bruce Sieverman and Peter Vandernoth on Sept. 22; Bart Ruroede, Mick Mazzaferro, Jason Rudder, Bruce Land and Semar Bell on the 23rd; Ian Ryan, Amy Finno and Donna Angevine on the 24th; my cousins Patty Hocker and Gayle Wilburn Bealer on the 25th; another cousin, Gwen Cutts, as well as Michael Santiago and Donna Harrison, on the 26th; Jordan Marshall, Anthony Chance, Barbara Klos and Dr. Micah Kaplan on the 27th; and Luke Doroski, Gregory Jensen, Matthew Blasko, Greg Barkley, Bob White Jr., Christopher Manfredi and Jim Harrison on the 28th.

Celebrating another year of wedded bliss this week are Eileen and Gary Charters, married 28 years on Sept. 24. Aileen and Mike Reed will celebrate their 17th anniversary, also on the 24th, and Alicia and Bobby Doucett mark 27 years of marriage on Sept. 27.
