William T. Flatley

William T. Flatley of Mattituck died on Thursday, September 15, 2011. He was 80 years old.

He was born on February 28, 1931, in New York City to John and Mary Flatley. Raised in Astoria, Queens, and a graduate of Manhattan Aviation School, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and enjoyed playing basketball and handball for the Air Force while in Europe and Africa.

On June 4, 1955, he married Jane Worthington at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church and together they made their home in Mattituck.

For 37 years, he was an engineer at Grumman, where he worked on various Navy jets.

Bill was a communicant of Sacred Heart Parish and a member of the Knights of Columbus-Marian Council and was currently a Fourth Degree Knight and Past Grand Knight. He remained an active member of the Astoria Ramblers Football Club.

Surviving are his wife, Jane; four children, Patricia Wittmeier of Laurel, Martin Flatley of Southold, Therese Murrock of Fayetteville, Ga., and Thomas Flatley of Virginia Beach, Va.; and 10 grandchildren: Emma and Claire Wittmeier, Rory and Ryan Flatley, Erin, Molly, Kathleen and Seamus Murrock and Maura and Aileen Flatley. He was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Sanford.

The family received friends on Monday, Sept. 19, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where Knights of Columbus and parish prayer services took place. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment, with U.S. Air Force military honors, was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.
