Today in sports: Greenport field hockey looks to continue hot start

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Kerri Hands (white jersey) has three assists so far this season for Greenport.

Expectations weren’t supposed to be very high for the Greenport/Southold/Shelter Island field hockey team this season. The Clippers were seeded 10th out of 12 teams in Division III.

But the Clippers are proving to be a feisty group. They won four of their first five games to start the season before yesterday’s loss at home to Rocky Point. The Clippers fell 2-1 against a veteran Rocky Point team that lost in the Class B playoffs last year to previously unbeaten Sayville.

The Clippers (4-2) will look to get back on track Tuesday when they host Riverhead (1-2) at 4 p.m.
