Charles Cornelius Richard

Cornelius Charles Richard Jr., 78, of New York City and Greenport, L.I., N.Y., died on June 10, 2011, at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City.

Born in Irvington, N.J., son of the late Cornelius Charles and Alice Louise Richard, he graduated from North Plainfield High School in 1950 while living in Watchung, N.J. He received two scholarships to the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I., and earned a B.F.A. in sculpture. He was a teaching assistant in the sculpture department at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art and Planning in Ithaca, N.Y., where he received a M.F.A. in sculpture.

Mr. Richard was assistant professor of art and sculpture at SUNY/New Paltz. Early in his career he participated in and won awards at numerous art exhibitions, including Andrew Dickson White Museum of Art at Cornell University, first prize; Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey, first prize; Newark Museum, honorable mention; Guild Hall in East Hampton, first prize; Jersey City Museum; Somerset Art Association; The Franklin Gallery; and Shakespeare’s Head.

He was a generous contributor to the fine arts all his life.

Mr. Richard was predeceased by his partner of 38 years, Richard B. Goldie. They both enjoyed and had been active members of the Sandy Beach community in Greenport since 1976.

He is survived by three sisters: Ruth Richard Hibbs and her husband, Harry; Doris Katherine Richard; and Joanna Richard Charnock and her husband, Donald.

A memorial service will be held in Greenport.
