James Clayton Sterling

James Clayton Sterling, 50, of Goose Creek, S.C., passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2011.

He was born March 5, 1961, in Riverhead, N.Y., one of three children of Richard W. Sterling and Barbara Gildersleeve Sterling, and spent his early years in Mattituck.

Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Navy as a submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator. He was employed by Bechtel-Bettis as a hazardous waste management coordinator, serving the Naval Nuclear Power School in Goose Creek, S.C.

He was an avid cyclist.

Jim is survived by his parents, Richard and Barbara Sterling of Smyrna, Del.; his brothers, Richard William Sterling and Lorraine Blevins of Clayton, Del., and Steven Robert Sterling and his wife, Renee, of Smyrna, Del., and their children, Reid and Maria; his friend Charles Ferranti of Arlington, Va.; his maternal grandmother, Pauline Gildersleeve; his uncle J. Herbert Gildersleeve and his wife, Diane, all of Mattituck, N.Y.

A graveside memorial service will be held Sept. 17, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Cutchogue Cemetery.
