Southold-Peconic: Indian Museum to offer year-round craft classes

Some members of the Southold Fire Department had the honor and privilege of participating in last Sunday’s Tunnel to Towers 5K run in New York City. They ran in their turnout gear in memory of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller. It was an emotional and uplifting day that made everyone involved proud to be an American.

A very happy anniversary to Buzzy and Iris Begora, who toasted 50 years of marriage on Sept. 17, and Keith and Barbara Radich, who celebrate their 25th on Oct. 2.

Little Anna Mudd blows out two candles on Sept. 30; Jackie O’Connor-Jagel celebrates Oct. 1, Caitlyn Flynn, Emmie Karem, Terry Rich and Sue Rogers have birthdays on the 3rd; Kevin Erdman’s is the 4th; and Nursel Unsal of the Southold High School cafeteria staff turns 50 on Oct. 4.

Moms, dads and grandparents are invited to a workshop on “Parents’ Communication Skills,” led by Sandy Hinden, on Thursday, Oct. 6, 7-8:30 p.m. at Southold Free Library.

Shirley Bratle won a colorful children’s sweater handmade by Mary Hewitt in the Friends of Southold Free Library’s September raffle. The current prize is a Longaberger oval muffin basket with cloth liner generously supplied by Melissa DeSimone. The drawing is set for Oct. 15.

The Southold Indian Museum will offer a year-round series of craft classes taught by experienced members of the museum staff and other instructors from the community. On Saturday, Oct. 8, you can learn the art of Gyotaku (Japanese fish printing) from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. An advanced class will be taught from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Advance registration is required. On Oct. 9, Dr. Arthur Goldberg will share images and adventures from his recent trip to the “Forbidden City” of Lhasa, in Tibet. He is a professor of chemistry and environmental science at C.W. Post.

Cell Phones for Soldiers provided another 100 calling cards for soldiers and military families this summer, thanks to all who donated their castoffs. The red donation boxes will remain in the Southold post office so please contribute your old cell phone. It really does go a long way in helping the families stay in touch.
