Mattituck High School to host lecture on teen mental health

Mattituck High School has rescheduled a discussion on adolescent mental health issues with internationally known speaker Dr. Xavier Amador.

The program originally scheduled for Wednesday will take place Thursday evening, Oct. 6.

Dr. Amador, a psychologist, is the author of the New York Times bestseller “I Am Not Sick. I Don’t Need Help!”, a guide to helping  people with mental illness accept treatment.

He is a teacher at Columbia University Teachers College and the founder and director of the LEAP Institute. LEAP stands for Listen, Empathize, Agree, Partner, and is a method of gaining the trust of someone you are in conflict with.

In addition to his professional experience, Dr. Amador has personally struggled to convince his brother Henry, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, to accept treatment.

Dr. Amador is a regular contributor to the Today Show and has been a guest on Good Morning America, Prime Time Live, CBS This Morning, NBC Nightly News, 60 Minutes and CNN.

The Mattituck lecture for parents will be held in the high school library at 7 p.m. Dr. Amador will also give a presentation to 10th, 11th and 12th graders during second and third period on Oct. 5. For more information, call 298-4860.
