Fire district budget hearings set for this month

Five North Fork fire districts, challenged to keep tax increases within the state-mandated 2 percent cap, will hold hearings this month on their 2012 budget proposals.

The budgets aren’t subject to public referendums, but public hearings afford residents an opportunity to hear about plans commissioners have for spending in the year ahead.

Here’s what’s being proposed in each local district:

Mattituck

Cutchogue
Proposed Budget: $1.25 million
Spending increase: $195,575
Tax rate increase: 1.8 percent
Hearing: October 18, 7 p.m.

Southold
Proposed Budget: $1.78 million
Spending increase: $34,000
Tax rate increase: 1.97 percent
Hearing: October 18, 7 p.m.

East Marion
Proposed Budget: $602,331
Spending increase: $22,834
Tax rate increase: 1.94 percent

Orient
