William Melville

William Melville died Oct. 9 at Peconic Landing in Greenport. He was 82.

He was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Jamaica, N.Y., to Helen (Cowan) and William Randolph Melville and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University. He married Marilyn Miller in Queens on Oct. 23, 1954.

For 35 years, he was a vice president of sales at Kennecott Copper in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was vested as Knight Commander, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and was a member of Utahns for a Just Peace in the Holy Land. He was an avid peace activist, according to family members.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Greenport; his sons, William Jr., of Manhattan, and David, of Salt Lake City; his daughter, Allison, of Park City, Utah; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visiting hours will take place Friday, Oct. 14, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, Father Tom Murray officiating. Interment will be in Salt Lake City.
