Today in sports: Greenport hosts Hampton Bays under the lights

The Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island football team had its hands full last week against the defending Long Island champion John Glenn Knights. Glenn came into Greenport and took care of business with a 35-7 first half that put the game well out of reach.

The Porters come back down to earth a bit today when they host 2-3 Hampton Bays. They Baymen come into the game clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in Division IV with 106 power points. The Porters (1-4) are tied for ninth place with The Stony Brook School with 98.

It makes for a must-win game tonight for Greenport if the Porters hope for any chance at a playoff spot.

The Baymen come into the game off an impressive win against McGann-Mercy, 40-6, last Thursday at home. The Baymen dominated on the ground and halfback Andrew Morris rushed for four touchdowns.

Greenport played last week without Tomasz Filipkowski, their starting halfback who was out with a sprained ankle. For the offense to gain traction this week, the Porters will hope to have Filipkowski back in uniform.

All the rain today should make for a sloppy course tonight. Rain could continue to fall throughout the game as well.

Be sure to check back tonight for a recap of the Greenport-Hampton Bays game.
