Photos: Families build homes for mythical creatures in North Fork’s ‘Enchanted Trails’
Dozens of families hiked the “Enchanted Trails” at Inlet Pond County Park in Greenport this weekend, a trail featuring homes for fairies, hobbits and other mythical creatures.
The event, hosted by the North Fork Audubon Society, aimed to entice youngsters to explore the outdoors. The nearly hour-long hike in the woods included fairy houses hidden throughout the trail to inspire children, as well as their parents, to build their own fairy house.
The event’s creator, Southold resident Donna Skrezec, said the fairy houses she built and placed along the trail were based on the children’s book “Fairy Houses,” written by Tracy Kane.
“I love the idea of connecting the written word to the natural world,” Ms. Skrezec said.
Other fairy houses featured throughout the trail were created during recent workshops held at Southold Free Library, Floyd Memorial Library and Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library. Girl Scouts from Browning Troop 94 and Daisy Troop 1316, as well as Mattituck High School students who also made fairy houses for the trail.
Over 150 people attended the event on Saturday and the North Fork Audubon Society will use the proceeds to fund future youth programs.
