Art Beat: Show of John Wissemann’s work in Brentwood; art show and sale at Oysterponds

• Work by John Wissemann of Southold will be exhibited at Gallery West on Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus from Oct. 13 to Nov. 10. A reception is set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.
Mr. Wissemann, a former art teacher at Southold High School, has worked as a painter, printmaker and draftsman for decades; his current work involves colored pencil and watercolor, with stencils using figures taken from Japanese woodblock prints.

• A Columbus Day weekend art exhibition and sale presented by Oysterponds Historical Society will celebrate local artists. Paintings, prints, photographs and sculpture will be offered between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, in the Orient museum’s Swanson Gallery of the Old Point Schoolhouse. Thirty percent of proceeds will benefit the historical society.

• Call for artists: Items are sought for East End Arts’ annual “Deck the Halls” Holiday Market, open from Nov. 29 through Dec. 23 at the Riverhead gallery.

Ornaments, jewelry and wearables, ceramics and crafts may be submitted for consideration (no painted rocks or shells). Artists may apply by in-person interview or by mailing a CD showing their work. Mail-in applications must be received by Nov. 5; interviews must be scheduled by Nov. 11 and will be held Wednesday to Friday, Nov. 16 to 18.

The entry fee is $30 per artist, except for those only submitting ornaments and holiday cards, for which there is no fee. Accepted artists must be or become members of East End Arts.

• ‘Favorite Places, Suffolk County,’ a juried photography exhibit, will open alongside historic images at Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead with a reception at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. Winners of the competition, chosen by juror Neil Scholl, an award-winning photographer and Hal B. Fullerton archivist, will be announced at the reception.

The show will be on view through Nov. 19.
