Barry J. Klein

Barry J. Klein of Southold died on Monday, October 3, 2011. He was 86 years old.

He was born on December 5, 1924, in New York City to Joseph and Catherine (Gabor) Klein. A graduate of Newtown High School in Queens and John Jay College in Manhattan, he had been a police officer with the NYPD and an ironworker with Local 40.

Formerly of Little Neck, Queens, he was a member of the Elks Club (BPOE) in Great Neck and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

During World War II, he served for three years with the United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific Campaign. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant and was the recipient of the Pacific Medal (Good Conduct Medal).

Predeceased by his wife, Grace (née Peck), whom he married on February 7, 1953 in Elmont, he is survived by his daughters, Nancy Slowey of Hampton Bays, Patti Licate of Lafayette, Colo., and Diane Klein of NYC; a sister, Barbara Astoreca of Manalapan, N.J.; and six grandchildren: Shannon and Christopher Slowey, Joshua and Kailey Licata and Marissa and Nicholas Velasquez.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Oct. 6, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Southold by Father Peter Garry, with the assistance of the Ministry of Consolation. Officers of the NYPD will serve as pallbearers and military honor will be rendered by the United States Army.
