Cutchogue-New Suffolk: East End Lionesses’ ninth annual Holiday Fashion Show, Nov. 3

October is National Book Month. “Embark on the journey of a lifetime … without luggage, tickets, a passport or leaving home. All you need is an open mind. And an open book.” Stop by the library, check their selection and learn about the array of programs and activities they have to offer.

Speaking of a journey of a lifetime, the High Adventure crew from Troops 39 and 117 — James and Adam Steele, Eric Marcus, Harrison Fort, Anthony Howel, Jared Goodale, Tim DeMay, Jon McCarthy and advisers Timm Steele, Ed Forte and Dan McCarthy — successfully completed a strenuous 12-day hike through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico at altitudes ranging from 6,500 to 12,500 feet. The crew covered over 100 miles carrying 50- to 70-pound packs. The scouts learned low-impact camping, which leaves no trace, used navigating skills with map and compass, and were responsible for setting up the campsites, preparing meals and bear-proofing their living space. The crew spent over two years training and preparing for this exceptional opportunity. They wish to thank the Suffolk County Council for its assistance with the trip, the community for supporting their fundraising efforts and their parents for their support and encouragement.

Happy birthday to Willie Burns, who blows out his candles on Oct 13.

Antique car aficionados and owners will want to stop at the Cutchogue Village Green this Saturday, Oct. 15, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the pre-World War II car show sponsored by Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council. All profits go toward the Village Garage.

The East End Lionesses will hold their ninth annual Holiday Fashion Show at Giorgio’s in Baiting Hollow on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. Proceeds benefit the needy and support scholarships for local students. Call Judy Wurtz (734-7328) or Sharon Vogel (298-4012) for tickets and information.

The American Legion Auxiliary will commemorate Veterans Day with a chicken dinner and dance on Nov. 11, 6-10 p.m. at Legion Post 803 in Southold, with music by Sahara and a cash bar. Tickets are $15 by advance sale only. To purchase, call Dot Charnews (734-7478) or Dianne King (298-4718) before Nov. 7.
