Robert J. Melchione

Robert J. Melchione of Southold died at home on October 24, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was 74.

Born in Queens Village on March 18, 1937, to Fred and Helen (Burger) Melchione, he attended Power Memorial High School and apprenticeship schools. For many years, he was a linotype operator for Peter F. Mallon in New York City and co-owner of Kings Park Taxi.

A former longtime resident of Kings Park, he had been a summer resident of Southold since 1944 and a permanent resident since 1996. He was a communicant of St. Patrick R.C. Church and a member of the Communication Workers of America and Island’s End Golf and Country Club.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia (née Sheahan), whom he married on September 19, 1959, in Norwalk, Conn.; four children, Susan McCluskey of Flemington, N.J., James (Ann) Melchione of Patterson, N.Y., Jean (Aaron) Smiles of Rocky Point and Mark (Kim) Melchione of Branchburg, N.J.; two brothers, Alfred Melchione of Kings Park and Richard Melchione of Southold; 11 grandchildren: Nicole Corbett, Anthony, Robert and Eric Melchione, Elizabeth McCluskey, Dan and Jami Smiles and Megan, Allison, Owen and Ryan Melchione; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, George Melchione.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold by Father Peter Garry.
