Today in sports: Greenport closes out season against Mercy

GARRET MEADE PHOTO | Ryan Malone leads Greenport against Mercy tonight.

There will be no playoff spot on the line tonight when the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island football team travels to Riverhead to take on McGann-Mercy at 7 p.m.

At 1-6, the Porters will simply look to end the season on a high note and earn some bragging rights over the Monarchs, who have struggled as well at 2-5.

The Porters faced a difficult schedule this year thanks to a high seeding. It didn’t get any easier last week when the Porters traveled to Amityville and the Warriors won 49-13. Two years removed from winning a Long Island Championship, Amityville showed off its impressive offense on the ground and through the air.

Mercy comes into the game off a shutout at the hands of Shoreham-Wading River. Mercy’s halfback, Pat Stepnoski, only played a few downs early in the game before coming out with an ankle injury he re-aggravated.

In other action today, the Mattituck girls volleyball team hosts Southampton at 4 p.m. And in a game that got postponed from yesterday, the Mattituck girls soccer team hosts Hampton Bays at 4 p.m.
