Today in sports: Southold boys look to kick back into gear

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Southold will look to Evan Miller for scoring today when the First Settlers face Southampton.

Coming off a bump in the road, the Southold boys soccer team hopes to return to its winning ways today.

The First Settlers (7-4-1, 5-2-1 in Suffolk County League VIII) suffered a 1-0 loss to Greenport/Shelter Island on Saturday thanks to Camillo Torres’ second-half goal for the Porters. That defeat at Greenport High School snapped Southold’s three-game winning streak.

Coach Andrew Sadowski and his First Settlers hope to bounce back with a positive result today against Pierson/Bridgehampton (6-3-2, 4-1-2) at Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor. The kickoff time is 4:30 p.m.

It will not be easy, though. The Whalers sit in third place, one place behind Southold in the standings. When the two teams met on Sept. 24 in Southold, the First Settlers prevailed, 3-2, in overtime. Drew Sacher scored two of Southold’s goals that day and Brian Cassidy netted the other.

Since that game, though, Pierson/Bridgehampton has been undefeated, winning two games and tying another two.
