Today in sports: Southold, Greenport face off in soccer

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Three soccer games mark all the action in local high school sports today, but each one has importance as teams look toward the playoffs.

For the second time this season the Southold and Greenport/Shelter Island boys soccer teams will face off. For the first time, they hope, there will be a winner.

The teams played to a 1-1 draw when they met Sept. 21. Since then Southold has won four of five to climb into second place in League VIII. Southold’s one loss during that stretch came against Port Jefferson, the current league leader at 6-0-1.

Southold is 5-1-1 in league and 7-3-1 overall. Greenport is in fourth place in the league at 3-2-2. Overall they’re 3-6-2.

In the first meeting between the two locals, Evan Miller scored for Southold and Erik Ramirez for Greenport.

Today’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Also in boys soccer Mattituck (4-3 League VII, 7-4 overall) travels to Southampton (7-0, 10-0-1) for a 6 p.m. game.
