Today in Sports: Boys soccer teams play for county titles

Two games. Two local teams. Two chances for a county championship.

A boys soccer double-header begins at 2:30 p.m. today at Diamond in the Pines when No. 4 Southold meets No. 1 Port Jefferson for the Class C championship. At 5 p.m. No. 4 Mattituck will face No. 3 Center Moriches for the Class B title.

Southold, coming in off a 4-2 win over Greenport/Shelter Island Wednesday, will face a huge challenge in Port Jefferson. The Royals are 13-1-1 coming into today and won by a large margin in both regular season games against the First Settlers (9-6-2). The teams played Oct. 20 and Port Jefferson won 4-1. The first meeting in September was a 5-0 Royals win.

If the First Settlers need any inspiration, they need only look at what Mattituck accomplished Wednesday. The Tuckers won on the road against previously unbeaten Southampton to upset the No. 1 seed in the B bracket.

The Tuckers will be vying for their second consecutive county title. It’s a rematch of last year’s county final, which ended in a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory for Mattituck. Going into last year’s game Center Moriches was the defending state champion.
