The Portly Grape in Greenport shuts down; property for sale

JENNIFER GUSTAVSON PHOTO | The Portly Grape in Greenport is now closed.

After nearly a year and half of doing business on Route 25 in Greenport, The Portly Grape has closed its doors.

A man who answered the phone at a telephone number listed in a recent advertisement listing the building for sale said the tenants were evicted Monday because they “didn’t pay their rent.”

The man, who declined to give his name, said three potential tenants have expressed interest in the property — formerly home to  the Shady Lady  and prior to that Porky’s — over the past few weeks.

“That place won’t stay closed for long,” he said.

Portly Grape owners Denise Burke and Michael Liegey Sr., along with Chef John Nordin, took over the Victorian-style inn and Simpatico Restaurant in 2010. Ms. Burke did not return phone calls Monday seeking comment for this story.
