Blotter: Pair of burglaries reported in Greenport

A Greenport woman reported that her Route 48 house was burglarized sometime between Oct. 30 and Nov. 7.

The burglar reportedly made off with two Samsung televisions, an iPod charger, an Airsoft BB gun, a 17-inch Toshiba laptop, a room air conditioner, a portable generator, 12 bottles of wine, a briefcase, Bose CD player and a set of hair clippers.

Police said that the thief apparently came in through the kitchen window. Detectives are investigating.

• Four Greenport roommates reported 39 pieces of jewelry, valued at several thousand dollars, stolen from their Wiggins Street house sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, police said. They also reported $500 worth of coins saved in coffee cans and $100 cash missing. Police said there was no sign of forced entry.

• A Mattituck man who was hit by a car while riding a bike along a sharp curve on Route 25 at Love Lane on Nov. 8 refused medical treatment by authorities, police said. But he was soon found in a nearby saloon and taken to an area hospital, police reports show.

A Mattituck woman who witnessed the hit-and-run accident said the bicyclist, 53-year-old John Rutkoski, suffered an arm injury in the accident. Mr. Rutkoski was found at the Broken Down Valise on Pike Street and taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital by Mattituck firefighters. His bicycle was taken to police headquarters. The hit-and-run driver remains at large.
• Three Hobart Road residents reported on the morning of Nov. 10 that their mailboxes had been damaged sometime overnight.
• The Mattituck Fire Department quickly extinguished a chimney fire at a house on Ole Jule Lane in Mattituck on the evening of Nov. 12.
• The Mattituck Fire Department quickly extinguished a brush fire on Lloyd’s Lane in Mattituck on the afternoon of Nov. 9, officials said. Firefighters received the call just before 2 p.m. and had nearly extinguished the fire just 20 minutes later, said firefighters on the scene, who were hosing down smoldering leaves.
Homeowner Emmanuel Zarbis, 77, was issued a citation for illegal burning of leaves.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
