Orient-East Marion parks commissioner running unopposed

A once contentious park district appears to have found its footing, according to its chairman. Only one person, an incumbent, is pursuing a full three-year term as a commissioner.

Jay McKasty, who won a one-year term as an Orient-East Marion Park District commissioner last December, hopes to land a full three-year term when district voters go to the polls Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Earlier last year, there was a dust-up over allegations that previous commissioners had been elected illegally and subsequent questions arose about the handling of financial records. Two commissioners defended themselves, then resigned, leaving Albie de Kerillis as the only sitting commissioner. He reorganized the commission and became its chairman and Linda Goldsmith and Linton Duell stepped forward to serve temporarily until a new election could be called.

Ms. Goldsmith was then elected to a full three-year term while Mr. Duell stepped aside, opening the door for Ms. McKasty.

A commissioners’ meeting will be held at Oysterponds Elementary School on Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m.; voting will follow from 7 to 10 p.m.
