Southold Town approves funds to expand Peconic Lane canine park
The nearly year-long effort to provide more recreational space for dogs in Southold took a big step forward last Wednesday, when the Town Board voted to appropriate $10,500 for improvements at the dog park behind the Peconic Recreation Center. The proposal passed unanimously.
Earlier that day, the board was still in doubt about the expense of the project, initially estimated at $18,000 because the town was considering buying fencing through an existing county contract. Board members instructed deputy director of public works Jeff Standish to find a way to cut the costs, and by that evening officials were confident the project could be done for less than the $10,500 they have now budgeted.
North Fork School For Dogs co-owners Dawn Bennett and Asha Gallacher are meeting with a garden designer to help lay out the space inside the park, which will be three times its current size and will include separate areas for large and small dogs.
Ms. Bennett said they plan to begin a fundraising effort to help beautify the park in upcoming weeks.
