Stella H. Checklick

Longtime Greenport resident Stella H. Checklick died Nov. 16 at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport. She was 93.

She was born Dec. 10, 1917, to John and Helen (Grajewski) Szeszko in Elizabeth, N.J., and graduated from Greenport High School in 1936.

On March 19, 1940, she married Joseph P. Checklick in a civil ceremony in Southold. The couple remarried on Sept. 18, 1942, in a Roman Catholic ceremony at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah, N.J.

Ms. Checklick worked at the Dupont ammunition plant in New Jersey during World War II. Later she took over her parents’ corner store at Third and North streets in Greenport. After closing the store in 1965, she continued to live in the building, where she resided for a total of 77 years. She also worked at Hazeltine in Riverhead and then at San Simeon until her retirement in 1982.

She was affiliated with American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, Greenport Homemakers and the St. Agnes Church Rosary Society. Family members said she enjoyed cooking, bingo, crafts and knitting, especially sweaters and scarves for the needy and hats for newborns.

Ms. Checklick was predeceased by her husband in 2001; a son, Joseph, in 1952; and a daughter, Joanne L. Dors, in 2004.

She is survived by her sons Michael (Cathy), of Cutchogue, and Peter (Robin), of Merritt Island, Fla., and her daughter Helen Ryan (Stephen) of Greenport; seven grandchildren: Sean Ryan (Katherine), Ian, Daniel and Caitlin Ryan, Michael and Cassi Checklick and Michelle (Luke) Bonang; and two great-grandchildren, Ela Ryan and Henry Bonang.

Visiting hours were held Nov. 18 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service took place Nov. 19 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, led by the Rev. Thomas P. Murray, followed by interment at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St, Jude Children’s Research Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, Burton Potter Post American Legion, Greenport Fire Department Rescue Squad or Eastern Long Island Hospital.
