The top runners in Suffolk County will convene at Sunken Meadow State Park this afternoon for the Section XI Championship and State Qualifier.

Divided into six separate races, the championship will be to see who wins the county title in each classification as well as to determine which runners advance to the state championship.

The Mattituck boys and girls will both compete in Class C. The boys run first at 2:25 p.m. in the race that also includes the Class D schools. Competition in Class C includes Southampton, Babylon, Center Moriches and Port Jefferson.

The Southold boys won’t need to concern themselves with those schools during the race. Their focus will be on trying to beat Pierson, Stony Brook and Ross to win the Class D title.

The Mattituck and Southold girls will run the final race of the afternoon at 3:50 p.m. As with the boys, Mattituck is Class C and Southold Class D. The big competition for Mattituck will be Center Moriches. Southold has Stony Brook to worry about.

Freshman Kaylee Bergen ran the top time for Mattituck at the Division Championship.
