Mattituck coach Frank Massa never got overly concerned with his team’s league record this year. Playing against mostly teams in Class B, he knew come playoff time, those teams wouldn’t be of concern.

Now is when the season really begins for Mattituck.

The Tuckers took care of business all season against the teams in Class C and earned the No. 1 seed in the playoff bracket. Today at 5 p.m. the Tuckers begin their defense of their county title against the No. 4 Port Jefferson Royals. The teams did not meet in the regular season.

Mattituck finished 5-7 in League VII and 9-10 overall. Port Jefferson played a league below and just made the playoffs by beating McGann-Mercy in its regular season finale to go 6-6. The Royals were 6-8 overall.

Mattituck completed its best season in program history last year by advancing to the Class C state semifinal pool. The Tuckers lost 10 players off that team but have regrouped nicely this season to put themselves in position for another playoff run.
