Two-car crash in Southold lands 80-year-old woman in hospital

An 80-year-old Southold woman was hospitalized with facial injuries Tuesday afternoon after she was involved in a car accident when exiting the Empire Gas Station on Route 25 in Southold, police said.

Betty Hermann was turning left onto Route 25 from the station in a 2007 Toyota when she failed to yield the right of way to a 2001 Dodge pickup truck driven by 39-year-old Keith Zurek of Greenport just after 4 p.m.

Police said that Mr. Zurek, who was driving with his wife, Laura Zurek, 34, was unable to stop in time and struck Ms. Hermann’s driver’s side door.

The Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad responded and took Ms. Hermann to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Police said that the Zureks refused medical attention at the scene. Both vehicles were towed.
