Chutney tasting — with a side of waterfront revitalization

The Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck hosted a chutney tasting and sale to benefit the nonprofit New Suffolk Waterfront Fund.

Volunteer Susan Dingle, who calls herself a “chutney custodian” was on hand to give out samples of Dr. Butterworth’s Nepalese Chutney and to educate visitors on the need for financial support of the Waterfront Fund, whose members are seeking revitalization of the New Suffolk waterfront.

The chutney is made from a recipe developed by Dr. Barbara Butterworth, a former school director who spent time in Nepal and who now resides here on the East End.  Chutney, which originated in India, is variously defined as a sauce, relish or condiment, and consists of chopped fruit or vegetables, vinegar, sugar, and spices.
