82-year-old man struck and killed on Route 48 after his car breaks down

An 82-year-old East Marion and New York City man died Sunday night after he was struck by a vehicle on Route 48 while tending to his own car, Southold Police said.

Richard Beaman was outside of his disabled vehicle about 5:10 p.m. when he was hit in the westbound lanes in Cutchogue, officials said. He died at the scene.

The driver of the car that struck him, 28-year-old Paul Surozenski of Southold stayed on the scene and was not charged in the crash.

Route 48 was closed in the westbound lanes for about four hours as police investigated the crash.
