Robert John Bridges

Robert John Bridges of Southold died at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport on Dec. 12 surrounded by his family after a 10-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born in College Point, N.Y., on Jan. 21, 1931, to George William and Elizabeth (Parlin) Bridges. During the Korean conflict, he served in the United States Air Force and on April 21, 1956, he married the former Arlene Vorisek in New York.

He attended schools in Kansas and was a graduate of Columbia University. A member of the American Institute of Architects, he was a registered architect in over 20 states and a partner with Bridges & Lavin Architects in New York City.

For more than 40 years, he was a resident of Garden City and served on the Architectural Review Board there, of which he had been a member and former chairman for nearly 30 years.

He retired to the North Fork nine years ago to be closer to his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two children, Mark, of West Babylon and Stacey Clausen of Southold; a son-in-law, Jeff Clausen of Southold; a sister, Ann Durst of Greenlawn; a brother, James, of Middle Island; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Robert Clausen, Kyle Clausen, Dylan Clausen and Andrew Clausen.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Southold, where he was a communicant. Father Peter Garry will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation would be appreciated.
