COLLEGE BASEBALL: Shelter Island gets a team The Shelter Island school district voted on Monday in favor of adding a seventh team to Hamptons Collegiate Baseball (HCB), which makes up a division of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. The team, which currently is without a nickname, will begin play in June.
“In the times we discussed expansion over the years, Shelter Island was always one of the first locales brought up,” HCB president Brett Mauser said. “It’s a wonderful community and the setting is picturesque, so we’re thrilled to bring high-level baseball and free family entertainment to the island this summer and for summers to come.”
Located between the north and south forks of eastern Long Island, visiting teams will travel by ferry to and from each game.
Shelter Island was added less than a month after the Center Moriches Battlecats joined the East End organization. Both teams will compete for the ACBL Hampton Division crown against the North Fork Ospreys, Riverhead Tomcats, Southampton Breakers, Sag Harbor Whalers and defending champion Westhampton Aviators.
Beginning in June, the ACBL season will continue through the first week of August, at which time the league championship will be decided.
In addition to playing 20 home games this summer (not including potential playoff games), the Shelter Island team will host free baseball clinics for children in the community. Shelter Island will be managed by Joe Burke, who starred at St. John’s University before playing seven seasons professionally, including two in the New York Yankees farm system.
HCB alumni include former UConn shortstop Nick Ahmed, a 2011 second-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves; former Texas State third baseman Kyle Kubitza, a 2011 third-round draft pick of the Braves; and former Stony Brook right-handed pitcher Nick Tropeano, a 2011 fifth-round draft pick of the Houston Astros. In 2011, a dozen HCB alumni played at the professional level, including in the Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations, as well as the independent Can-Am League.
COLLEGE WOMEN’S SWIMMING: Magliola wins 200 IM Kristen Magliola, a junior from Shoreham, won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes 18.25 seconds for SUNY/Oneonta in a 128-115 loss to SUNY/Cortland on Dec. 10.
COLLEGE RUGBY: Some Mattituck in Vermont Shawn Williams of Mattituck completed his second season with the Norwich University (Vt.) men’s rugby team. Jessica Zaweski, a junior from Mattituck, earned a varsity letter from the Norwich women’s rugby team.
AWARDS: Mercy’s Suffolk Zone winners Victoria Tremble and Keith Schroeher, who are both seniors at Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School in Riverhead, were presented with the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance – Suffolk Zone Award recently. The criteria for the award include achievement in academics and physical education, outstanding character, school-wide leadership and serving as a role model for “living a healthy lifestyle” inside the school as well as in the community.

Keith Schroeher, a senior, was awarded the Boden Memorial Football Award during Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School’s recent football dinner. The award has been presented annually for nearly 40 years to a senior football player who is outstanding both on and off the field.
