Stephen Calvin Tuthill

Stephen Calvin Tuthill, formerly of Mattituck, died Nov. 22 at the age of 87.

He was born Feb. 5, 1924, in the main house at the center of the Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museums just east of the village, the youngest of the four children of Philip Robinson Tuthill and Helen Wilcox Tuthill of Mattituck, Long Island, New York.

Stephen, aka Calvin, aka Cotton, graduated from Mattituck High School, excelling in track, baseball and academics. All of Calvin’s life, he was a voracious reader with two special passions: baseball and birds. Calvin farmed on the Tuthill family farm on Long Island with his brothers until they went overseas to serve during World War II. Calvin stayed behind to keep the farm going as his father, Philip R., was busy with his responsibilities as president of the North Fork Bank and Trust Co.

In 1953, Calvin and his mother moved to Delaware so he could farm with his brother, Philip Wickham, on the newly acquired farm on Bowers Beach Road. He was living on that farm when he passed on Nov. 22, 2011.

Calvin was secretary for the Delaware Produce Growers for many years. He also was the church school secretary for the Presbyterian Church of Dover, Del., for 53 years.

Calvin grew potatoes on the Tuthill Bros. Farm and was admired for his integrity, his truthfulness and his stewardship of the land. Calvin kept all the machinery on the Tuthill Bros. Farm in good repair.

Calvin was an unassuming, humble, shy, gentle and quiet man who was unwaveringly loyal to his family and friends. His Christian faith grounded and directed him.

Stephen Calvin Tuthill was predeceased by his father, Philip Robinson Tuthill; his mother, Helen Wilcox Tuthill; his brothers, Philip Wickham Tuthill and Hull Eugene Tuthill; and his sister, Vesta Tuthill Miller. He leaves behind 10 nieces and nephews and 19 great-nieces and -nephews. S. Calvin Tuthill was laid to rest beside his mother, father and sister in the cemetery of Southold Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
