Virginia Hairston

Virginia Lillian Hairston of Peconic died at Peconic Landing in Greenport on Dec. 2, 2011. She was 92 years old.

She was born in Powhatan, Va., on Feb. 9, 1919, to Thomas and Katie (Goode) Carter. She later graduated from Cutchogue Elementary School and Southold High School and, on Sept. 17, 1939, married Walter Hairston at First Baptist Church in Cutchogue.

A resident of the North Fork for the past 83 years, she was involved in private care. She was a dedicated member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Southold, where she was a Deaconess and Sunday school teacher and served on the Missionary Board and Church Program Planning Committee. She was also the church’s longtime organist and belonged to the North Fork Organ Society.

Surviving are her children, Olive Hayes of New York City, Kenneth Hairston of Brooklyn and Diana Parker of Peconic; nine grandchildren: Jamal Hairston, Kareem Hairston, William Murray, Angela Parker-Rose, Christina Parker, Christopher Parker, Jesuina Hairston, Edgar Parker Jr. and Alexander Parker; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and -nephews; one goddaughter, Elizabeth Brown Hubbard; and many other family members too numerous to record.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Cutchogue Cemetery by the Rev. Tommy Edmond. A church service will take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.
